Bob Wegryn and The Story Behind BLOODY BOLD
For years, since his college days at the University of Connecticut, Bob Wegryn has made his unique blend of red ripe tomato concentrates, freshly ground horseradish, real lemon juice, a combination of spices and other natural ingredients for family and friends. Starting in February 1996, he produced his Bloody Bold Bloody Mary Mix professionally and it is now widely distributed throughout the country.
For many years, Bob had been making gallons of Bloody Marys for his friends, relatives and neighbors at weddings, bar mitzvahs, showers and on Super Bowl Sunday. In September of 1995, Wegryn decided to bottle his formula. With no previous experience in the beverage industry, it took months of experimentation to perfect the process to mass produce his product because it required pasteurization.
Bob’s concept was to create a premium quality Bloody Mary Mix that tasted great, one that was made with pure and fresh all natural ingredients with no preservatives added. Other objectives were to give it a rich body so it would not “water down” when the ice began to melt and to keep the sodium content at a low level. Even the last sip of Bloody Bold had to taste good.
In January 1996 everything finally fell into place. To be sure he had what people really liked, Bob blind tested his mixture versus six other national brands. He did this with 60 people from different walks of life. All were people who indicated they loved Bloody Marys. The result was unbelievable: it was no contest. All 60 preferred Bloody Bold over the others.
After the first bottling run in February 1996, Bob packed his car with 20 cases of Bloody Bold, still warm from the pasteurization process. The next morning he went out and in two hours sold seven out of seven liquor stores in Guilford, Madison and Branford Connecticut. All the store owners loved it and today are selling lots of Bloody Bold to their customers.
Wegryn’s next step was to contact a large liquor distributor in Connecticut, Hartley and Parker Ltd. He met with the owners for 2 hours and walked out with an order for 550 cases. Within a few months, Bloody Bold was in several Country Clubs, Resorts, Hotels and hundreds of notable restaurants along the East Coast as well as numerous liquor stores and food markets.
